Elizabeth “Betty” Ann O’Brien, 89, of Canton, formerly of Jeffrey Dr., Wallingford, died peacefully in the presence of her loving family, Wednesday, September 16, 2009. She was the beloved wife of the late Jack O’Brien.
She was born in Hartford, May 7, 1920, a daughter of the late John and Johannah (Shea) O’Connor. After graduating from Weaver High, Betty worked in banking in the Hartford area before marrying her husband Jack in 1947, a marriage that lasted 51 years. Early in their marriage, Betty and Jack moved to Wallingford where they settled down and raised their family. She took great enjoyment being with her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and participated in every celebration and school event that she could. A loving and devoted mother, Betty could be found quietly sitting on the sidelines of multiple sporting events which began with the Wallingford youth leagues and continued through the high school and college level. She loved all children, never refusing someone a ride, a meal or a sympathetic ear. Her welcoming home seemed to have a revolving door with extra chairs always available to pull around the kitchen table. She loved reading and made great use of the Wallingford Library, where later in life she learned computer skills in order to stay in touch with family through e-mail.
She is survived by her five children and their families, Barry and Sandy O’Brien of Durham, Bob O’Brien and Lisa Bogardus of Suffield, Dave and Clara O’Brien of Hebron, Nancy and Craig Dennen of Simsbury, and Kathy and Kevin Dinnie of New Canaan; and her 15 grandchildren, Barry and Jackie O’Brien, Michael and Brenna O’Brien, Kyle, Sean and Megan O’Brien, Jocelyn, Kelly, Julie and Mark Dennen, Maureen, Eileen and Jack Dinnie, and Anthony Morelli. She was predeceased by her son Kevin O’Brien.
Mrs. O'Brien's family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Betty's live-in caregiver, Lynda Scott, as well as Necy, Gretel, Kristen and Janet for their wonderful and compassionate care which allowed her to remain comfortably at home until the last week of her life.
Her family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, September 20, 2009, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., Wallingford. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. from the funeral home when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery in Wallingford. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of her son Kevin O’Brien may be sent to United Cerebral Palsy, www.ucp.org, 1660 L St., NW, Suite 700, Washington, DC 20036. www.wallingfordfh.com
